Furthermore, The Converse Public Library has been award a reimbursement grant up to $2,000 from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission Libraries and Literacy Grant Program through the Texas Workforce Commission. It is designed to purchase computer equipment, for the City these funds will allow the purchase of three laptops. These laptops will be designated for adults who are seeking to improve literacy skills, digital literacy, English language proficiency through our Mango Languages ongoing subscription, basic education/GED and those actively looking for employment.
According to the TACAE Handbook, "Adult education has for a long time played a significant role in education the populace of this society. If this movement is to continue, sound research must be initiated, good and solid education programs must be developed, quality education and accountability must be emphasized, and adult educators must be encouraged to continue their education in order to stay in tune with the needs, changes, issues and trends in the field. The quality of adult education in Texas will improve only as the competencies and qualifications of teachers and directors are improved." The City of Converse will continue to be a resource in adult education and will continue to promote the training of Library Staff to better their knowledge and the community they serve.
"This scholarship opportunity is unique in that it focuses on adult literacy, which should always be a priority in public libraries. Adults do not typically have access to school or university libraries. This allow the Converse Public Library to have resources just for our adults to improve their literacy and especially their digital literacy," said Derika Bailey, Library Director. The mission of the Converse Public Library is to enhance purposeful learning, creative discovery, and to serve the community with the expansion of knowledge, technology, and responsive library services. The scholarship and the grant both allow Converse to further their mission and continue serving the community.
